2017 Virginia Election Update
The Virginia Coalition to Reform COPN congratulates all of the winners of Tuesday’s election. We look forward to working with Governor-Elect Northam to lower Virginians healthcare costs by reforming our COPN laws. As a physician, Governor-Elect Northam has a keen understanding of the health care system and the need to put patients first. We are hopeful that we will be able to make significant progress in our efforts during his administration.
The most surprising news from Tuesday is the seismic shift in the political landscape in the House of Delegates. While there are still some recounts occurring, the Democrats have currently picked up 15 seats. This leaves the House of Delegates with a 51-49 split, with the Republicans maintaining the majority. They went into the election with a 66-34 majority- so this is a significant change. With all of these new Delegates, there will be a huge need for education on COPN and how it affects their constituents. We are excited to educate this new class of legislators and show them how they can do something right now to help our broken health care system.
